Wallingford Open Garden - Sat 18th and Sun 19th October

Date:03rd October 2014| Category:General
Busy, busy, busy, like bees collecting pollen for their hives, we too are working diligently to create a garden fit for your visit on the weekend of the 18th and 19th of October. Unpredictable spring showers and warm sunshine are also doing their bit with buds and new shoots soaking up this nectar. I feel we are in for an explosion of growth and colour-a sight to behold.

As you can well imagine a lot goes on behind the scenes to create an open garden and this year I have been totally spoilt by the ladies of Steels Creek Garden Group, they are absolute gems, giving their time to not only support me but also Gill’s program. Jane, Jill H, Lorna, Jen and Jennifer I thank you ever so much because without your help I don’t think either the garden or I would have made it!!

I must say I can see order rising to the fore. Jane commented the other day on how different the garden looks in just two weeks and in another two weeks we will see another burst of growth and colour. Little treasures like the Welsh poppy have already been spoiling us with their heads of soft orange. They look like shot silk as they float in the gentle breeze. And as I am busily working in the garden a subtle but intoxicating perfume lingers in the air, of course it’s the white perennial stock, Matthiola incana, definitely one to consider having in your garden. Spring wouldn’t be spring without blue bells, very English, but I love seeing their blue heads, weaving their way through the garden. There is no better addiction, for me, than plants and gardens.

To end I wanted to mention a little something about Gill. Some years back, after my mother’s death,Audemars Piguet Replica Watches we were sorting out her plants, and in amongst these treasures Gill spotted a huge hanging basket, it was overflowing with spectacular orange flowers- a zygocactus, I think. Gill took a fancy to it; I think the flowers impressed her. She nurtured this memory plant for many years. Then the other day as the ladies and I were finishing our propagating I noticed Jill H gently watering each plant using my mother’s old aluminium tea pot. It looked so sweet. Gill would have loved this too. Also I have tidied up a spot for the children to find. A bright green hedge leads the way, roses and lilacs perfuming the air with a table and chairs at the end, giving them their own secret spot to enjoy.

All proceeds will go to Gillian’s Rainbow Bridge a program for disadvantaged children and abused/neglected animals. Gill’s program is held at Wallingford, the family farm, where the activity room is on its way to completion. Programs will be in full swing early 2015 and the farm animals will be there to say hello. Your support will be totally appreciated.

Please join us at Wallingford on the 18th or 19th of October for a family day out with a stroll through our winding garden, plants propagated from the garden will be for sale, a hot cuppa, delights to tantalise your taste buds and company from like minded garden enthusiasts. What a joy!

I hope to see you there.
