Tips on caring for your animals over Winter.

Horses

Feeding your horse a generous biscuit of good quality hay is equal to one light rug. Even though there is grass in the paddock over winter don’t think your horse doesn’t need extra feed. Keep checking his/her weight; run your hand over his ribs this will give you an indication of weight loss. If he is losing weight feed his some extra food- basic complete, good quality hay, or if you are worried please talk to your vet, he/she will be happy to help you.

Don’t forget Gillian’s Rainbow Bridge is happy to help you too, just contact us by email us or send us a letter we will help in any way we can.

Also if you have helpful ideas on the care of a farm animal, especially over the winter months, please let us know and we will pass this valuable information on to others.

Rugs

Make sure the rug fits well, if not adjust straps etc., check for rub marks at least weekly. It doesn’t take long for an unfitting rug to break the skin causing a wound. Imagine how uncomfortable and painful this must be.

If unsure talk to your vet, Gillian’s Rainbow Bridge or a knowledgeable friend, I’m sure they will be more than willing to help you solve this problem. If you find broken skin, look for the cause, adjust the rug, fix the problem spot or replace with a better fitting rug, while treating the problem area. You may need to talk to your vet.

It's cheaper and wiser in the long run to address small problems rather than ignoring them and ending up facing huge severe issues. Be alert to your horses needs, after all you have put his/her life in your hands.

Let Gillian’s Rainbow Bridge know how your farm animals are fairing over winter and what you do to keep them warm, safe and comfortable.  Feel welcome to contact us, we look forward to hearing from you.
