Our 1st Book Club

Date:16th July 2015| Category:General
Over the Term 2 school holidays, local children aged between 10 and 12 years arrived at our farm to be part of our 1st Book Club. These children have been actively involved in our most recent programmes so have a good connection with the farm and the animals.

Nessie, our treasured heater, was getting revved up ready to keep us warm for the coming day’s activity. Of course the animals come first. Cleaning houses, feeding all the pleading faces and lots of pats are a must before the children head outside to face a day’s adventure Replica Prada Handbags.

While inside the activity room, the children were eager to get their Club books started. Bright faces quickly glanced at all the beautiful paper. The table was overflowing with rainbow coloured paper. So much to choose from! It took the children some time to make a final decision on what paper they would like for the cover of their handmade book. Once chosen, the children threw themselves into the challenge of cutting, pasting and folding, ending up with a book we would all be proud to own. However it didn’t stop there, the children then embellished the cover with their favourite photo, accurately placed and framed. The look of achievement is always a pleasure to see.

Now for some of the finer details, starting with their introductory page. Care and time was taken on this important page, gorgeous drawings of little Blacky, our disabled alpaca, touched your heart, while an artist’s impression of Rosie, our old Welsh mountain pony, filled the page. A striking black background embellished with gold writing was eye catching, and we all admired the beautiful precise hand writing. Everyone was busy as time was running out; Val and Jeorgiah were there to give a helping hand while Mums and Dads were full of praise.

Book Club meets on a Wednesday afternoon, just after school has finished. Afternoon tea rejuvenates both the body and mind as the children fill their books with stories, poems, new words, photos and items they have collect on the farm. It is a wonderful time, chatting together, learning all the way. Later the children help to feed and bed the animals before heading home. The Book Club is aimed at supporting children who may find language a trifle difficult at times or may simply need to gain self confidence and personal growth.

We feel it is important to use the best materials possible for these enthusiastic children who have given their heart and soul in making their bespoke books and the result is impressive.

I’d like to thank the Healesville Lion’s Den, especially Elaine, for donating us an inviting collection of books for the children to read and use.

Students from Swinburne University have started a book drive in support of our Book Club and the delightful children who take part. Our focus is on learning about farm animals, so we love stories about these animals, plus of course other interesting books.
